October 2020 Trauma-Sensitive Schools

Help When It's Needed

The October issue of EL is a necessary read. Our students are suffering from trauma and we need to know how to respond.
Cherie Countryman (@MrsCCountryman)
Appreciate ASCD for providing this timely collection of articles to support our students, staff, and families!
Neil Gupta (@drneilgupta)
I can't wait to read this month's magazine. Okay, I always look forward to reading EL each month. EL delivers timely, relevant and thought-provoking information.

Reducing Remote Learning Anxiety

Loved reading this article tonight! ["Maintaining Relationships, Reducing Anxiety During Remote Learning" by Jessica Minahan] Very practical! Teachers—this is a must-read, especially if you are teaching remotely because of COVID-19!
Rebecca West Burns (@bburns)

Are You Trauma-Informed?

Paul Gorski, such a brilliant article ["How Trauma-Informed Are We, Really?"]. As a school working to actively embed trauma informed practice with our community accountability policy (AKA as behaviour policy), we need constant reflection so as to not reproduce harm through other aspects of school culture or our personal lens.
Lucy Stephens (@LucystephensTNS)
Thank you, Paul Gorski! This needed to be written and needs to be read by every student, educator, and community member!
Jill Gurtner (@JillBGurtner)
Thoughtful article. How can we engage all educators in these three commitments [to be aware of and work to change issues of instructional culture, systemic oppression, and punitive cultures and ideologies]?
Mimi Luong (@msmimiluong)

EL Live!

Holy cow! This follow up EL magazine interview with Cornelius Minor is unbelievable. His tenacity to honor those who've been at the work for decades and to call out the damning effects of profitability in education is powerful stuff. Watch this! [http://bit.ly/ELliveMinor]

Editor's note December 2020

Editor's note: EL magazine is taking our stories off the page. We've launched a new video series titled EL Live, showcasing stories and ideas from Educational Leadership authors and readers and highlighting other offerings from ASCD. Look for new episodes each month on the ASCD YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/ELlive.

Love (or dislike) something in a recent issue of EL? We want to hear about it! Write to us at edleadership@ascd.org or on Twitter. Printed reactions may be edited for clarity and length.

Correction

Due to an editing error, a passage about policing in Carla Shalaby's article in the Nov. 2020 issue ("Classroom Management as a Curriculum of Care") misrepresented the author's intended meaning. It should have referred to critical questions being raised by "police and prison abolitionists," not "reformers."

EL’s experienced team of writers and editors produces Educational Leadership magazine, an award-winning publication that reaches hundreds of thousands of K-12 educators and leaders each year. Our work directly supports the mission of ASCD: To empower educators to achieve excellence in learning, teaching, and leading so that every child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.
