For the last 25 years, Dave Weikart has had a significant influence on the education of young children. Quiet rides in the morning with his young grandson remind him of some of the most important lessons he's learned about great teaching and learning.
Each morning around 7:45, I drive to my daughter's house to gather my grandson, Brian, for our trip to the High/Scope demonstration preschool. If you have not spent a daily, 45-minute drive with a 3-year-old and been a grandfather at the same time, you don't know the pleasure. There are so many things to discuss: “I went with my dad to Big Wheel, and we got some new baskets for my room”; to observe: “Hey, Pa, the horses are still out in the yard in the cold. See the steam”; and to wonder about, which is the topic I want to share with you.
