As they design curriculum, educators must determine the answers to three of the big questions of education:
- What is most important for students to KNOW?
- What is most important for students to be able to DO?
- What kind of person do we want students to BE?
The answers to these questions lead to the creation of what we call the KNOW/DO/BE framework. The framework is helpful when working in one discipline, and it is invaluable when planning for interdisciplinary work. An important step for creating the framework—and a rigorous curriculum—is the backward design process.
