About the Authors

Debbie Zacarian, EdD, is known for her expertise in strengths-based leadership, instructional practices, and partnerships with culturally and linguistically diverse student and family populations. She has more than three decades of combined experience as a district administrator, university faculty member, and educational service leader. The founder of Zacarian & Associates, she provides sustained policy and practice supports for educators that help them work more successfully with diverse student and family populations. Her authored and coauthored books include Teaching to Strengths: Supporting Students Living with Trauma, Violence, and Chronic Stress; In It Together: How Student, Family, and Community Partnerships Advance Engagement and Achievement in Diverse Classrooms (with Michael Silverstone); Mastering Academic Language: A Framework for Supporting Student Achievement; The Essential Guide for Educating Beginning English Learners; Transforming Schools for English Learners: A Comprehensive Framework for School Leaders; and Teaching English Language Learners Across the Content Areas. Michael Silverstone is a veteran primary grades teacher and education writer. After 15 years as a 2nd grade teacher, his interest in intrinsic motivation, mindfulness, and creative expression led him to become a Montessori educator. In 2017, he was selected as an American Montessori Society Emerging Leaders Fellow. Currently, Silverstone is a staff member of the Montessori Elementary Education Teacher Training Collaborative as well as a lower elementary (ages 6–9) teacher in the Boston area. Silverstone is the author of a number of nonfiction books for children, including Winona LaDuke: Restoring Land and Culture in Native America and Rigoberta Menchu: Defending Human Rights in Guatemala (Feminist Press at the City University of New York). He and Debbie Zacarian are the coauthors of the book In It Together: How Student, Family, and Community Partnerships Advance Engagement and Achievement in Diverse Classrooms and a chapter in Academic Language in Diverse Classrooms: Mathematics, Grades K–2: Promoting Content and Language Learning.
