      ASCD's first Outstanding Young Educator Award (OYEA) was presented to Patrick Bathras at the 2003 Annual Conference. Bathras, who has worked for the Anne Arundel County Schools in Maryland since 1993, is currently assistant principal at Brooklyn Park Middle School in Baltimore.
      In his former role as a teacher and now as an administrator, Bathras has continually focused on increasing student achievement. Bathras is also being recognized for a variety of contributions to his school and district. He has given staff development presentations, served as a mentor, developed business partnerships, and encouraged at-risk students to learn high-level math.
