ASCD Community in Action

Call for Candidates

ASCD's Nominations Committee is seeking candidates for governance positions in 2012. The following positions are open every year: president-elect; board of directors (two members are elected by the general membership; two are elected by the Leadership Council); and members-at-large of the Leadership Council. Elected leaders are responsible for ensuring that programs, products, and services focus on the success of learners and that ASCD resources are used wisely to promote ASCD values and guide the future direction of the association.
Consider nominating yourself or encourage potential candidates to apply. Go to www.ascd.org/nominations for more information on the open positions, including time commitments and qualifications, and to access the nominations form. The deadline for submitting the completed form is January 31, 2012.

So What Happens Next?

After January 31, each applicant for the president-elect and board of directors positions is notified of the date and time of his or her interview with the Nominations Committee. Interviews are scheduled during Annual Conference. The Nominations Committee then determines the slates of candidates for both the General Membership and Leadership Council elections. Members can view candidates' photos and biographical information during the summer.
ASCD's elections open September 1 and close October 15. Candidates are informed of their status in November, and a list of the successful candidates is published in the January issue of Education Update. Terms start directly after the next annual conference.

Join ASCD's Nominations Committee

The Nominations Committee develops slates of candidates for the annual elections. We encourage members to take advantage of this exciting opportunity.
  • Be a current member of ASCD.
  • Have a minimum of three years of service in an ASCD leadership role.
  • Attend a two-day training session and a meeting before and during the annual conference.
  • Have an interest in selecting highly qualified slates of candidates.
Before the board of directors' spring meeting, the ASCD president appoints a Nominations Committee, which reviews the list of applicants and recommends at least eight candidates and three alternates to the board of directors for approval. The new Nominations Committee forms directly after Annual Conference.
In the fall, Nominations Committee members and alternates meet at ASCD headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, for a mandatory two-day training session. ASCD covers the cost of transportation, meals, and lodging.
  • Review all written applications for elected office.
  • Interview all candidates for president-elect and board of directors positions.
  • Determine whose names will be put forth to run in the General Membership and Leadership Council elections.
For more information, contact Governance Director Becky DeRigge at bderigge@ascd.org or 800-933-2723.
