ASCD Community in Action

Healthy School Communities

The Healthy School Communities Mentor Program

Healthy School Communities (HSC) has recently launched a new mentor program, in which educators from several experienced HSC sites provide advice, feedback, and leadership to newer mentee sites. There are currently 4 mentor sites and 12–15 mentee sites.
Healthy School Communities is a worldwide effort to promote the integration of health and learning and the benefits of school-community collaboration. For more information about the program, go to www.healthyschoolcommunities.org.

What Schools Can Do

Community: We often use the word, but what does it actually mean? According to a monograph recently published by HSC, the term can refer either to a particular neighborhood, with its families, businesses, and agencies, or to culture, that shared sense of interaction, understanding, or being.
The publication describes the actions that schools and school communities need to take to realize systemic change that improves the health, well-being, growth, and development of their students, staff, and schools. The actions are divided into nine levers of change.
The Healthy School Communities Model: Aligning Health and Education in the School Setting is available at www.ascd.org/ASCD/pdf/siteASCD/publications/Aligning-Health-Education.pdf.

Are You ASCD's Next Outstanding Young Educator?

ASCD salutes the next generation's dedication to excellence and supporting the whole child with the Outstanding Young Educator Award (OYEA) Program. ASCD is seeking young professional educators who
  • Educate the whole child, helping ensure that each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.
  • Demonstrate educational leadership in their school, district, and community.
  • Improve student achievement.
  • Make significant contributions to the education community.
Do you or any of your colleagues demonstrate these qualities? If so, nominate an educator today—either one of your colleagues or yourself—at www.ascd.org/oyea. Nominations close August 1, 2011.
OYEA winners will receive a $10,000 award and will be honored at the 2012 ASCD Annual Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, March 24–26, 2012. The winners will participate with OYEA Honorees in a yearlong program of professional development and networking. Pinnacle by GlobalScholar is a sponsor of the 2011 OYEA Program.

Coming This Summer

In mid-June, look for Educational Leadership's summer online edition on "Intervention: What's Working." We're featuring a lineup of thoughtful articles on such topics as an online tool that simplifies progress monitoring, a 30-minute-a-day reading program that turned students on to reading, behavior agreements with students, and a student-initiated antibullying campaign.
Your next print edition, "Promoting Respectful Schools," will begin appearing in your mailboxes in late August. We at EL wish you all a happy summer!
