ASCD Community in Action

ASCD Launches a Web Site for Whole Child Education

As part of its public engagement campaign to encourage educators, parents, the public, and decision makers to rethink how they educate young people, ASCD has launched a new interactive Web site: www.wholechildeducation.org.
Educators, parents, students, business and community leaders, and citizens will find tools to urge policymakers to ensure that all our children become healthy, productive, engaged citizens. Site visitors are invited to grade their schools and communities on the key components of ASCD's New Learning Compact; pledge to support whole child education; share stories about great schools and classrooms; contact their local, state, and federal policymakers; and access resources to help them make the case for a well-balanced education that emphasizes academic rigor as well as the essential skills of critical thinking and creativity.
In addition, ASCD will sponsor a series of community conversations to build understanding and win broad-based public support for the association's holistic approach to learning.
  • Each student enters school healthy and learns about and practices a healthy lifestyle.
  • Each student learns in an intellectually challenging environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students and adults.
  • Each student is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader community.
  • Each student has access to personalized learning and is supported by qualified, caring adults.
  • Each graduate is challenged by a well-balanced curriculum and is prepared for success in college or further study and for employment in a global environment.
