ASCD Community in Action

Register Now for ASCD's Legislative Conference!

What will the U.S. presidential election and the new Congress mean for education in 2013? How will policy decisions related to the Common Core State Standards; No Child Left Behind (NCLB) waivers; educator evaluation systems; and education funding affect what's happening in your districts, schools, and classrooms?
ASCD's 2013 Leadership Institute for Legislative Advocacy (LILA) will address these and other timely topics that influence your day-to-day work as an educator. Register now for an outstanding opportunity to hear from national education leaders about the latest education policy developments, network with fellow educators, and share your expertise with your federal lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
The conference will take place January 27–29, 2013, at the Westin Georgetown Hotel in Washington, D.C.
Conference highlights include
  • Sessions with Capitol Hill and U.S. Department of Education insiders who will share their perspectives on the future of NCLB and other federal education priorities.
  • The introduction of ASCD's 2013 Legislative Agenda, which will outline the association's policy goals and vision for the coming year.
  • A Capitol Hill boot camp featuring video vignettes that will address the dos and don'ts of conducting meetings with your legislators.
For the conference agenda and registration as well as travel information, visit www.ascd.org/LILA. Questions? Contact ASCD's policy team at policy@ascd.org.

Whole Child Down Under Webinar Series

Designed expressively for Australian educators, the ASCD Whole Child Down Under webinar series looks at a whole child approach to education through three lenses: the role of the principal, a systems approach to school improvement, and health and education alignment. Presented by Australian educator and ASCD Director of Whole Child Programs Sean Slade, the three webinars address how a whole child approach links to current debates in Australia regarding the National Curriculum; findings from the Gonski report (which addresses funding inequities in Australian schools); and the value of a well-rounded education. View and share archived session recordings, presenter handouts, and related resources at www.ascd.org/wcdownunder.

Where Great Teaching Begins: Planning for Student Thinking and Learning
<EMPH TYPE="3">By Anne R. Reeves (ASCD, 2011)
What comes to mind when you think about lesson planning? If you're like most teachers, you focus on the material you need to present, what you'll do and say, what you'll ask students to do, and the assessments you'll create and administer. And if you're like most teachers, you also know what it's like to be disappointed when this careful planning doesn't always lead to the deep understanding and mastery you intended.
There's a better way to approach instructional design. It begins with a simple mental shift from "planning for activities" to "planning for learning outcomes," with a crucial concentration on learning objectives. Where Great Teaching Begins takes you step-by-step through the essential behind-the-scenes work necessary to make instruction truly effective and help students learn deeply and meaningfully.
