Six Big Wins for ASCD!

Educational Leadership has won three Distinguished Achievement Awards from the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP), in the following categories:
  • One-theme Issue: "<LINK URL="http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/sept12/vol70/num01/toc.aspx">Feedback for Learning</LINK>" (September 2012). Reviewers noted that "Feedback for Learning can easily be a how-to guide for years to come for any educator seeking to master the difficult art of giving useful feedback."
  • Learned Article: "<LINK URL="http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/dec12/vol70/num04/The-Common-Core-Ate-My-Baby-and-Other-Urban-Legends.aspx">The Common Core Ate My Baby and Other Urban Legends</LINK>" by Timothy Shanahan (December 2012/January 2013). Reviewers commented on the article's "excellent writing and design—both of which worked together incredibly well."
  • Illustration/Online Graphic: "<LINK URL="http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/mar12/vol69/num06/Taming-the-Wild-Text.aspx">Taming the Wild Text</LINK>," illustration by Chris Buselli (March 2012). Reviewers noted that the design was "all at once compelling and draws readers into the text. It's an eye-popping example of the 'art' of publishing."
An ASCD book, a theme issue of Educational Leadership, and a cover illustration for EL all won honors from the Association for Media and Publishing.
  • Technical Books: <LINK URL="http://www.ascd.org/Publications/Books/Overview/Turning-High-Poverty-Schools-into-High-Performing-Schools.aspx">Turning High-Poverty Schools into High-Performing Schools</LINK> by William H. Parrett and Kathleen M. Budge won the Silver Excel Award.

Introducing New Membership Benefits

Member Insurance Program—for All ASCD Members

ASCD's new Member Insurance Program for all ASCD members features insurance plans carefully chosen for their valuable benefits at competitive group rates for professional liability, life, home, auto, and health.

Professional Liability Coverage—for ASCD Premium Members

ASCD is also offering a new in-dues benefit for premium members—$1 million in professional liability insurance as part of your ASCD premium membership. In September, premium members will receive an e-mail or letter in the mail with the details of their professional liability insurance coverage, including an insurance certificate.
These new programs are offered through the Trust for Insuring Educators (TIE), which has been protecting educators and their families since 1973. Learn more about both programs at www.ftj.com/ASCD or call 800-821-7303.

Remembering Gordon Cawelti

Gordon Cawelti, ASCD's Executive Director from 1973 to 1992, died April 6, 2013, in Boca Raton, Florida. During his 19-year career at ASCD, the association experienced growth in membership, diversified its products and services, and outgrew several headquarters buildings. (For more about Cawelti's accomplishments, see stories in the May 1992 issues of Educational Leadership and Education Update.)
Cawelti, who had been both a principal and superintendent before coming to ASCD, was a visionary and an entrepreneur. But first and foremost, he was an educator who believed that the education community needed to play a greater role in deliberating policy and developing reform proposals.
Cawelti leaves a long-lasting legacy. ASCD plans to publish a tribute to him in the 2014 ASCD Annual Conference program and to remember him at the Cawelti Distinguished Lecture next March in Los Angeles.
