Closing the Achievement Gap

In December 2001, education experts came together in Washington, D.C., to discuss ways to address disparities in student achievement at the National Press Club forum on “Reading & Race: Closing the Achievement Gap.” Panelists included Kati Haycock, director of the Education Trust; Pedro Noguera, professor in the College of Education, Harvard University; Hugh Price, president of the National Urban League; and Eleanor V. Horne, vice president of Educational Testing Service. Lisa Bintrim, associate editor for Educational Leadership, moderated the panel. The panelists discussed the causes of the gap in reading achievement and gave their recommendations for closing the gap—high-quality teachers, challenging curriculum, and high expectations for all students.

ESEA Reauthorized

President george W. Bush has signed into law a final version of No Child Left Behind, the reauthorized version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The final shape of ESEA will largely be determined at the state level as states develop their own responses to the legislation. The participation of informed, thoughtful, and caring educators during this implementation process will help determine whether ESEA will serve the well-being of all of our students. The Learning First Alliance, a partnership of ASCD and 11 other education organizations, recently issued the report “Every Child Learning: Safe and Supportive Schools.” The report is a blueprint for making and keeping America's schools safe, supportive learning communities for children across the country.
