Congratulations Photo Contest Winners

Thanks to all participants in ASCD's 1999 Photo Contest. The judges awarded six prizes for excellence in color and black-and-white photography. First place in color went to Piera Tombolato from Auckland, New Zealand. Her series of photos showed students hard at work on art projects. Second place went to Dale R. Myers from Eugene, Oregon, for his photo, "Vicky and Jessica at the Oregon Coast Aquarium." And third place went to Elana Luberto from Ann Arbor, Michigan, for a photo of a 2nd grader reading to a 5th grader.
The first place winner for black-and-white photos was Sara Helen Sansoucy from Westport, Massachusetts, for her photo of kindergartners at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Second place went to Robert Miller from New Carlisle, Ohio, for a classroom shot of a student, "Mac." The third place winner was Barbara Sheehan, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for her photo of a girl holding a pumpkin.

ASCD Publications Recognized

  • The Association of Educational Publishers (EdPress) honored Educational Leadership with the Best in Category—Learned Article for "The Basics in Japan: The Three Cs" by Catherine Lewis and Ineko Tsuchida (March 1998). ASCD also won Best in Category—Instructional Materials for Understanding By Design by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe. Educational Leadership was a Distinguished Achievement Award finalist in several categories: "For All the Children Who Were Thrown Away" by Daniel Brown (April 1998) for Feature Article; "The Discipline of Hope: An Interview with Herb Kohl" by Marge Scherer (September 1998) for Interview; and "How the Brain Learns" (November 1998) for One-Theme Issue. Teaching with the Brain in Mind by Eric Jensen was a finalist for Special Publications and Curriculum/ Technology Quarterly was a finalist for Newsletters.
  • The Society of National Association Publications (SNAP) Excel Awards gave the ASCD 1998 Annual Report the Gold Excel Award for Special Publications—Annual Reports. Educational Leadership also earned a Bronze Award for Magazine—Single Topic Issue for the December 1998/January 1999 issue, "The Spirit of Education."
  • The Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX) honored Educational Leadership's November 1998 issue, "How the Brain Learns," with an Award for Excellence for Magazines and Journals—Printed. The 1998 ASCD Annual Report also received an Award for Excellence.
