ASCD Names 1997 Annual Conference Speakers

      • Marva Collins, award-winning teacher and child advocate. Collins will speak on the topic of exceptional teaching, drawing upon her experiences as the founder and principal of the Westside Preparatory School in Chicago, where high expectations have yielded spectacular results.
      • Howard Gardner, professor of education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Author of The Unschooled Mind: How Children Think and How Schools Should Teach, Gardner continues to refine and expand his theory of multiple intelligences. A question-and-answer special feature will follow his address.
      • Tom Chappell, co-founder and president of Tom's of Maine personal care products. Chappell will explain his vision for socially responsible business leadership. He is author of The Soul of a Business: Managing for Profit and the Common Good.
      • Claudio Sanchez, education correspondent for National Public Radio, Sanchez will moderate a lively theater-in-the-round discussion among prominent political figures about the policy and practical implications of education reform.
