During the past year, ASCD publications and videotapes have received a number of awards. The Educational Press Association of America (EdPress) presented Educational Leadership magazine with awards for the one-theme issue "Educating for Diversity" (May 1994), the learned article "How Emotions Affect Learning" by Robert Sylwester (October 1994), and the cover design for "The New Alternative Schools" (September 1994) by Steven Blackwood and Gary Bloom, which was also selected by the Illustrator's Club as one of the best illustrations created in the Washington, D.C., area in 1994.
Five ASCD videotape program were recognized for excellence this year. Action Research: Inquiry, Reflection, and Decision Making and Teaching Learning with Technology both received Certificates for Creative Excellence from the U.S. International Film & Video Festival, as did Multicultural Education, which also won an Award of Merit from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). What's New in School: A Parent's Guide to Cooperative Learning won a Silver Apple award from National Educational Media and an Award of Excellence from NSPRA. Challenging the Gifted in the Regular Classroom won a Certificate for Creative Excellence from the U.S. International Film & Video Festival, as well as Distinguished Achievement and Best of Catergory awards from EdPress.
Two audiotape programs won awards from NSPRA. On Multiple Intelligences and Education with Howard Gardner received honorable mention and A House Divided . . . Religion and the Public Schools received an Award of Excellence.
Finally, The Executive Director's Report, 1994, designed by Karen Monaco, won an Award of Excellence from NSPRA, and ASCD's Curriculum Update newsletter won a bronze Excel Award for general excellence from the Society of National Association Publications.
