      Each year, ASCD awards the Outstanding Young Educator Awards (OYEA) at Annual Conference.
      The 2011 OYEA winners are Luis Torres, principal of P.S. 55 in the Bronx, N.Y., and Brad Kuntz, a teacher at Gladstone High School in Gladstone, Ore. Torres revolutionized his New York elementary school by instigating a dramatic turnaround for the 704 prekindergarten through 5th grade students who attend P.S. 55. In Oregon, Kuntz not only teaches Spanish, but also pioneers environmental education and advocacy in his school community. He's established an Environmental Leadership course that has motivated students to start recycling programs and create an on-campus compost system that fertilizes the school garden.
      Now ASCD is looking for the next OYEA winners. ASCD is awarding $10,000 to young professional teachers and administrators who
      • Educate the whole child, helping to ensure each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged;
      • Demonstrate educational leadership in their classroom, school, district, and community;
      • Show a positive impact on student achievement; and
      • Illustrate significant contributions to the education community.
      Thinking back over the school year, do you demonstrate these qualities, or know of an individual who does? If so, nominate yourself or an educator for the Outstanding Young Educator Award (OYEA) today!
      Nominations for the 2012 award close August 1, 2011. Visit http://oyea.ascd.org for more information.
      All nominations must align with the criteria for consideration and eligibility requirements available at www.ascd.org/oyea. Nominators of the winners will receive a complimentary one-year membership to ASCD. The OYEA winners will be honored at the 2010 ASCD Annual Conference in Philadelphia, Pa., March 24–26, 2012. OYEA Winners and OYEA Honorees receive monetary awards and will also participate in a year-long program of professional development and networking. Pinnacle by GlobalScholar (www.globalscholar.com) is a sponsor of the OYEA program.
