This places ASCD in a much-respected position—it is this position of respect that makes ASCD such an influential organization. Such influence is accompanied by great responsibility. The Association's responsibility is increasing, particularly as it gains and expands influence in the area of policy development.
This makes it extremely important that the Association's leadership is able to move it at an appropriate pace and in a positive direction as its area of influence grows. To meet this challenge, ASCD must continue to have leadership that is knowledgeable of educational issues and the role of the Association in addressing them. Leadership must continue to be progressive in its guidance toward meeting the needs of all learners and educators. I welcome the opportunity to use my leadership skills and experience as a member of the Board of Directors in meeting the challenge of carrying out ASCD's Strategic Plan and helping to chart a course for ASCD's future.

Statement of Leadership: ASCD's international learning community holds in common a passion for professional growth, renewal, and educational excellence. Our rich experiential, cultural, and philosophical diversity is strongly linked to a mutual commitment to meet the diverse needs of all children.
We enhance our abilities and resolve by seeking knowledge that will inform our work; exercising leadership and influencing decision makers; accomplishing worthy purposes through clarity of focus; and coming together as a community, accessing the best parts of all of us for the enhanced learning of children everywhere.
In our various spheres there is unrest, and consequently, no rest from the needs of students today. Violence, discontent, abandonment, and neglect are in many lives, and education is a critical key to stepping beyond discouragement and unyielding challenge.
In the roles we occupy and our deepest commitments, every member is a leader, and every leader is a mentor. We are connected and have in common not only that we are all diverse, but that we are all committed to the quality education of all children. Therein lies our focus and strength. Our mutual caring and our widespread spheres of influence are the wellspring of ASCD's ability to influence those who affect the education of children.
