The 1996–97 ASCD Review Council recently presented a report to the Board of Directors on curriculum supervision. The Review Council defined curriculum supervision as the role of "persons whose basic job description includes planning, directing, or supporting the development, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum."
The report summarized information from a questionnaire, interviews, and published documents. The Review Council used these sources to determine the status of curriculum supervision, the quality of ASCD support for curriculum supervision, and possible additional support ASCD could offer.
Among its findings, the report concludes that there is no shared vision for the supervision of curriculum; that training and resources for fulfilling the role of the curriculum supervisor are inadequate; that confusion exists over who should provide curriculum as school systems decentralize; and that ASCD is not viewed as a primary resource for curriculum supervision. The report recommends that ASCD take leadership in bringing a common vision to the processes of curriculum decision making.
The members of the Review Council who wrote the report are Sandra Wegner (chair), Arthur Costa, Quincy Harrigan, Corrine Hill, and Maryann Johnson.
