Vote Now for President-Elect and a Review Council Member

Your ballot for the 2003 ASCD election is enclosed. The open positions are
  • The President-Elect for 2004–05, who will become President in 2005–06 and Immediate Past President in 2006–07.
  • One Review Council member, who will serve for five years.
Your ballot reflects aspects of the implementation plan for ASCD's new Constitution. Elected candidates will take office at the conclusion of ASCD's 59th Annual Conference and Exhibit Show, March 22, 2004, in New Orleans, La.
To help in your selection, this issue of Education Update provides biographical data on the candidates, who are presented in alphabetical order under separate headings for each office. Candidates for President-Elect have prepared statements of leadership to indicate how they would lead ASCD if elected. Affiliates of associations are referred to in the text by the geographic name and abbreviation (e.g., Ohio ASCD, Alaska NEA).

Demographics of the Current Review Council

  • Ethnicity/gender—2 Asian females, 1 Caucasian female, 2 Caucasian males.
  • Position—4 university personnel, 1 superintendent.
  • Region—1 East (PA), 3 West (CA, HI, WA), 1 Midwest (MO).

Election Restrictions

In accordance with ASCD nomination and election procedures, candidates are required to observe the following conditions:
  • Candidates and their supporters must refrain from requesting (orally or in writing) the support or votes of ASCD members.
  • Candidates and their supporters are not permitted to distribute printed literature announcing or supporting their candidacy.
  • Candidates and their supporters are not permitted to produce publications or displays highlighting the positive qualities of candidates, whether or not ASCD candidacy is mentioned.
  • Candidates and their supporters may not engage in any organized effort to promote or enhance the candidacy of any individual.

Additional Qualifications

By action of the Executive Council in October 2000, qualifications were further defined for ASCD governance positions.
President-Elect—Membership in ASCD for at least the five years prior to nomination. Commitment to participate in numerous meetings and activities throughout the year. Demonstrated leadership accomplishments—scholarship, significant professional contributions, knowledge of current educational issues, effective communication skills. Willingness to attend numerous functions and meetings throughout the year. Support of ASCD's values and concepts. Knowledge of ASCD's purposes, goals, and plans. Experience on the Board of Directors is highly recommended.
Review Council—Membership in ASCD for at least the four years prior to nomination. Demonstrated skills in research, analysis, synthesis, communication, and collaboration. Demonstrated knowledge of ASCD's policies, practices, and procedures. Commitment to participate in several meetings throughout the year. Commitment to identifying and prioritizing issues through the use of flexible and multiple methods with the membership and governing bodies.
