Your ballot for the 2007 ASCD election is enclosed. The open positions are
- President-Elect for 2008–09, who will become President in 2009–10 and Immediate Past President in 2010–11.
- Members of the Board of Directors, who will serve for three years.
- Members-at-large of the Leadership Council, who will serve for three years. (Note: Six positions are open, but the election is not contested this year).
Elected candidates will take office at the conclusion of ASCD's 63rd Annual Conference and Exhibit Show, March 17, 2008, in New Orleans, La.
This issue of Education Update provides biographical data on the candidates, who are presented in alphabetical order under separate headings for each office. Candidates for President-Elect and the Board of Directors have prepared statements on their respective visions for ASCD. Affiliates of associations are referred to in the text by the geographic name and acronym (e.g., Ohio ASCD, Alaska NEA). Current members of the Board of Directors and at-large members of the Leadership Council are listed below. (Italics indicates the term ends on March 17, 2008.)

Election Restrictions
In compliance with ASCD nomination and election procedures, candidates are required to observe the following conditions:
- Candidates and their supporters must refrain from requesting (orally or in writing) the support or votes of ASCD members.
- Candidates and their supporters are not permitted to distribute printed literature announcing or supporting their candidacies.
- Candidates and their supporters are not permitted to produce publications or displays highlighting the positive qualities of candidates, whether or not ASCD candidacy is mentioned.
- Candidates and their supporters may not engage in any organized effort to promote or enhance the candidacy of any individual.
Additional Qualifications
By action of the Executive Council in October 2000, qualifications were further defined for ASCD governance positions.
President-Elect—Membership in ASCD for at least the five years prior to nomination. Commitment to participate in numerous meetings and activities throughout the year. Demonstrated leadership accomplishments—scholarship; significant professional contributions; knowledge of current educational issues; effective communication skills; willingness to attend numerous functions and meetings throughout the year; support of ASCD's values and concepts. Knowledge of purposes, goals, and plans of ASCD. Experience on the Board of Directors is highly recommended.
Board of Directors—Membership in ASCD for at least the four years prior to nomination. Must have demonstrated leadership in education and in the Association. Need demonstrated collaborative and communicative skills. Commitment to policies, programs, and services of the Board and ASCD. Commitment to participate by active involvement at scheduled meetings and Annual Conference. Must have evidence of active involvement in the Association (e.g., committees, Annual Conference, Leadership Council). Participation in affiliates is desirable.
Members-at-Large of the Leadership Council—Membership in ASCD for at least the two years prior to submission of nomination. Demonstrated leadership—e.g., technical specialist; department head/team leader; teacher mentor; administrator; commitment to participate and be actively involved in leadership meetings and activities, including the Annual Conference.
