ASCD's second annual Curriculum Development Academy will be held at the State University of New York's Geneseo Campus, July 24–29, 1994. Participants in this experiential training will learn models for transforming traditional secondary school courses into performance-based and integrated coursework.
Teams of secondary curriculum leaders will learn through doing: the week's work is organized around a series of design tasks and problems, including "authentic simulation" design, curriculum as engaging narrative, problem-based learning, Socratic seminars, curriculums built "backward" from performance and portfolio requirements, and novel schedules to make new curriculums and assessment a reality. An important feature of the Academy is involvement with 40 high school students in a summer lab school running concurrently with the Academy. Grant Wiggins and his staff from the Center on Learning, Assessment, and School Structure (CLASS) will be the consultants.
Enrollment in the Academy is limited to teams. The 75 participants will be chosen by application process. The fee per person is $895, which covers room, board, and Academy registration and materials. For an application, please write Deborah Howerton, ASCD, 1250 N. Pitt St., Alexandria, VA 22314; or call (703) 549-9110, ext. 329. The deadline for receiving applications is April 1, 1994. Notification of acceptance will be May 1, 1994.
