"Critical Transformations" was the theme of ASCD's Annual Conference and Exhibit Show, held last month in San Antonio, Tex. Thousands of educators from around the world gathered to explore the nearly 300 professional development sessions offered, visit the 500 exhibitors showcasing their products, and share their experiences with colleagues.
Dynamic general sessions were conducted by Geoffrey Canada from the Harlem Children's Zone, who spoke about Saving the World, One Child at a Time; Don Tapscott from the Alliance for Converging Technologies in Toronto, who addressed Growing Up Digital: The Net Generation and the Transformation of Learning; and John Merrow from Learning Matters in New York, who shared his views on The Future of Public Schools and Democracy.
Each year, ASCD awards the Outstanding Young Educator Awards (OYEA) at Annual Conference. This year's winners were Brian Nichols, principal, Hidenwood Elementary, Newport News Public Schools in Virginia, and Michael Powell, assistant principal, Patuxent Elementary School, Prince George's County Public Schools in Maryland.
