Good advocacy isn't limited to canvassing the Hill. It's also about acknowledging and thanking legislators who get it right. Following the Day on the Hill and closing out formal LEAP 2006 activities, ASCD Executive Director Gene Carter and ASCD President Richard Hanzelka returned to Capitol Hill to honor Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Representative Michael Castle (R-Del.) with the first-ever ASCD Whole Child Leadership Award.
“I am truly honored to receive this award from ASCD,” said Harkin. “Educators, parents, and children rely on Congress to fund education initiatives that will help our kids reach their full potential. With help from organizations like ASCD, I am confident we can persuade the Senate to meet this responsibility. After all, there is no better investment we can make than developing the minds of our children.”

EL’s experienced team of writers and editors produces Educational Leadership magazine, an award-winning publication that reaches hundreds of thousands of K-12 educators and leaders each year. Our work directly supports the mission of ASCD: To empower educators to achieve excellence in learning, teaching, and leading so that every child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.
