ASCD is saddened by the death of Harold Shane, retired dean of Indiana University's School of Education and a former President of ASCD. Shane died July 12. He was 78 years old.
A prolific author, Shane wrote, edited, and contributed to a vast array of professional publications on subjects ranging from language arts instruction to teaching in the microelectronic age. He once estimated that his scholarly and popular writings had reached an audience of one billion people. His book The New Baby sold more than 25 million copies.
An active ASCD member, Shane served as President of the Association in 1973–74 and was a member of the Review Council from 1975 to 1981.
