ASCD is saddened to announce the death of William Alexander, who served as president of ASCD in 1959-60. Alexander, professor emeritus of education at the University of Florida, was best known for his ground-breaking work in middle school education. He coined the term "middle school" in 1963 and was coauthor of the first textbook on the subject, The Emergent Middle School. Alexander died on August 27th. He was 84.

EL’s experienced team of writers and editors produces Educational Leadership magazine, an award-winning publication that reaches hundreds of thousands of K-12 educators and leaders each year. Our work directly supports the mission of ASCD: To empower educators to achieve excellence in learning, teaching, and leading so that every child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.
