ASCD is saddened to announce the death of William Alexander, who served as president of ASCD in 1959-60. Alexander, professor emeritus of education at the University of Florida, was best known for his ground-breaking work in middle school education. He coined the term "middle school" in 1963 and was coauthor of the first textbook on the subject, The Emergent Middle School. Alexander died on August 27th. He was 84.
