As part of ASCD's 60th anniversary celebration, long-time members and leaders are sharing their thoughts and reflections on being a part of the ASCD community. This month: Pat Ashcraft, who recently completed a term of service on the ASCD Executive Council. A member since 1987, Ashcraft attended her first ASCD conference as a teacher in 1985. Today she is director of staff development for the Shelby County Schools in Memphis and a participant in Tennessee ASCD.
Noteworthy Changes: In the past, people questioned whether ASCD should be more politically involved. That involvement has happened, and it has been a good thing, with the developments in education in the last few years, such as the increased focus on testing, the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (No Child Left Behind), and the federal government's increased involvement in education.
Meaningful Milestones: ASCD's Web presence has made a big difference in giving ASCD direct contact with everyone and communicating what we have to offer.
Personal Perspective: It is so important for people to become involved in ASCD because it is all-encompassing. ASCD provides opportunities to take part in activities that involve all educators, from preschool to college level. When you go to meetings that cover only your subject matter or grade level, your focus can become too narrow. ASCD helps educators keep their eyes on the whole spectrum.

ASCD is a community dedicated to educators' professional growth and well-being.
