As part of our 60th anniversary celebration, long-time members and leaders are sharing their thoughts on being part of the ASCD community. Richard Hanzelka served on ASCD's Executive Council from 2000 to 2003 and has been a member since 1978. He has been executive director of Iowa ASCD since 1995.

Noteworthy Changes: There is a real increased sense of collaboration between ASCD and the affiliates that was not as strong at early Affiliate Leadership Conferences. On a more global front, the efforts at internationalization are a positive change, and the Review Council's current focus on internationalization is encouraging.
Fond Memories: When I first attended the Affiliate Leadership Conference, we took a tour of the ASCD headquarters, which at that time was on Pitt Street in Alexandria, Va. That visit gave me a clear sense of being part of something important, and it helped move my involvement to a different level. Likewise, I felt proud of the role Iowa has played when I saw the clock donated by Iowa ASCD displayed in the lobby of the current headquarters building on Beauregard Street.
Personal Perspective: ASCD is the pinnacle of professional organizations, and my involvement with the Association has increased my professional focus to a level I couldn't have imagined years ago. There's a constant sense that you're contributing to the whole learning experience. The emphasis on teaching and learning is not just talk; you see it in action all the time.
