Based on input from more than 10,000 ASCD members who returned their issues survey, the Issues Committee has identified the following concerns as potential targets of concerted ASCD action plans in 1996: violence prevention and safety in schools, the best educational uses of technology, protecting and honoring diversity in the classroom, support for public schools in a democracy, equitable financial support, and teaching toward voluntary standards.
The Committee will report the survey results and its recommendations for possible positions to the Board of Directors. At ASCD's Annual Conference in New Orleans, March 16-19, two town meetings will allow members in attendance to debate these issues, before the Board votes to adopt one or two of them for action by the organization. Copies of the proposed positions, with background information, will be mailed with Conference Program books and will be available at the town meetings in New Orleans as well.
