The Journal of Curriculum and Supervision, ASCD's scholarly journal, has a new editor at its helm. O.L. Davis, Jr., a professor of curriculum and instruction at The University of Texas-Austin, has been selected to replace Edmund Short of The Pennsylvania State University, who has edited the journal since its creation in 1985. Davis, who originated the idea of the Journal, has served on its editorial board and has been a contributing author.
While the Journal has existed only a relatively short time—eight years—it "has already achieved a very well-respected place among journals in the field," Davis says. "I want to continue the strengths of the Journal."
While he does not foresee any radical changes, Davis would like the Journal to pay more attention to solving real-world problems. "The Journal is performing its role best," he believes, "when it contributes to people's richer understanding of the practical: in planning what's to be taught, and in considering important policy decisions." He would also like to see more articles that focus on specific subject areas as they explore issues of curriculum, staff development, and improving instruction.
The Journal is fully refereed: all articles are selected through an organized peer review process. Articles tend to be longer and more systematically grounded in one or more scholarly traditions than articles in ASCD's Educational Leadership magazine.
Published quarterly, the Journal has about 5,000 subscribers. Subscriptions cost $25 for ASCD members, $35 for nonmembers. To subscribe, contact ASCD's Membership Department, 1250 N. Pitt St., Alexandria, VA 22314; (703) 549-9110.
