ASCD is now accepting proposals for sessions at next year's Annual Conference, which will be held March 17–19, 2001, in Boston, Mass. The conference theme, "Reaching for Balance: Resolving Educational Dilemmas," will include six strands:
- Technology in Education: A Guiding Light or a Blinding Vision? How can we use instructional technology to improve teaching and learning? How can schools afford to keep up with the need for new and expensive equipment?
- Standards and Accountability: Improving Achievement or Inhibiting Instruction? Are some teaching strategies more effective for helping students meet standards? What should be the consequence of meeting or not meeting standards?
- School Renewal: An Opportunity for Improvement or an Imposed Sentence? How can we create a shared vision based on common beliefs and values? How can we encourage teachers and students to develop expectations of excellence?
- School Communities: Building Walls or Removing Barriers? How does parent involvement influence student learning? How can schools and businesses act as partners?
- Educational Leadership: Crafting a Vision or Following Fashion? How can we identify and support tomorrow's leaders? How can we expand leadership opportunities for women and minorities?
- Tomorrow's World: Maintaining National Identities or Becoming Global Citizens? How can we preserve our sense of identity and embrace a global society? What role will technology play in supporting a global society?
