To improve math understanding, create a word wall with math vocabulary and concept words displayed at random, advised consultant and author Rachel Billmeyer. The math word wall exposes students to math words throughout the year and also can be used for free-writing prompts. Ask students to summarize something they have learned using three or more words from the word wall, Billmeyer suggested. Or provide a simple sentence stem to get them started on free-writing. For example: “A polygon is like . . . .” or “Division can be used when . . . .”
