The 1997-98 ASCD Review Council recently presented a report to the Executive Council and Board of Directors that examines the role and effectiveness of the Review Council itself. The Review Council ensures that ASCD's purposes are reflected in the Association's policies, practices, and procedures.
The report summarizes information gathered from discussions, inquiries, two extensive questionnaires, ASCD staff interviews, an analysis of 10 previous Review Council reports, and the Review Council Open Hearing. Among its findings, the report concludes that "the Review Council, as an organizational oversight body, is necessary and serves a valuable role for organizational health," but that "the impact of Review Council reports has been moderate to low with regard to overall organizational behavior."
The report recommends that ASCD budget sufficient funds to support a revised working calendar for the Review Council and that ASCD's Constitution be modified to include language that requires action on Review Council reports.
The members of the Review Council who wrote the report are Quincy Harrigan (chair), Corrine Hill, Maryann Johnson, Arthur Steller, and Sandra Gray Wegner.
