Comments like these are heard frequently, in backyard conversations as well as in the faculty lounge. Those who make them have ideas about what constitutes a “good” school, although they do not typically state these opinions explicitly. It is important, however, to do so; only if we know what specifically we mean by “good” can we hope to achieve it.
