About the Author

Hugh B. Price is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, the nation's oldest think tank. He served as president and CEO of the National Urban League from July 1994 through April 2003. During his tenure, he launched the Urban League's historic Campaign for African-American Achievement. During 2006–2007, he cochaired the Commission on the Whole Child, which was established by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

From 1978 until 1982, Mr. Price was a member of the editorial board of the New York Times and frequently wrote editorials about public education. He later became vice president of the Rockefeller Foundation, where he was instrumental in conceiving and initiating the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future, as well as the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program, a quasi-military youth corps aimed at turning around the lives of school dropouts.
