I believe that a curriculum centered on nurturing healthy mental habits will better help students succeed in school and in life. In this chapter I describe a successful eight-week-long poetry course that I have been developing over the course of 14 years to promote the Habits of Mind.
As a young teacher, if my class paid attention and looked engaged, I felt successful. In my first 10 years, it happened at times. Now, after 20 years, I look into the eyes of an individual student and ask myself, "Has she learned something today that really matters?"
