About the Authors
Douglas Fisher is a Professor of Language and Literacy Education in the Department of Teacher Education at San Diego State University (SDSU) and a classroom teacher at Health Sciences High and Middle College. He is the recipient of an International Reading Association Celebrate Literacy Award and the Farmer Award for excellence in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English, as well as a Christa McAuliffe Award for excellence in teacher education. He has published numerous articles on reading and literacy, differentiated instruction, and curriculum design as well as books, such as
Creating Literacy-Rich Schools for Adolescents (with Gay Ivey), Improving Adolescent Literacy: Strategies at Work (with Nancy Frey), and
Teaching English Language Learners: A Differentiated Approach (with Carol Rothenberg). He has taught a variety of courses in SDSU's teacher-credentialing program as well as graduate-level courses on English language development and literacy. An early intervention specialist and language development specialist, he has taught high school English, writing, and literacy development to public school students. Nancy Frey is Professor of Literacy in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University and a classroom teacher at Health Sciences High and Middle College in San Diego. Before moving to San Diego, Nancy was a special education teacher in the Broward County (FL) Public Schools, where she taught students at the elementary and middle school level. She later worked for the Florida Department of Education on a statewide project for supporting students with disabilities in general education curriculum. She is a recipient of the Christa McAuliffe Award for excellence in teacher education from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, and she was a finalist for the International Reading Association's Outstanding Dissertation Award. Her research interests include reading and literacy, assessment, intervention, and curriculum design. She has published in The Reading Teacher, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Educational Leadership, and several other journals. She has coauthored books on literacy such as Improving Adolescent Literacy: Strategies at Work, Reading for Information in Elementary, Scaffolded Writing Instruction, and Checking for Understanding. She teaches a variety of courses in SDSU's teacher-credentialing program on elementary and secondary reading instruction and literacy in content areas, classroom management, and supporting students with diverse learning needs. Carol Rothenberg is a staff developer in the area of literacy and English language learners. Providing support and guidance to teachers across content areas and grade levels, she coaches teachers in planning, assessing, and reflecting on instruction. She has worked with elementary and secondary schools throughout the San Diego Unified School District, training teachers and administrators on effective programs and instruction for English language learners. An experienced classroom teacher, Carol has taught bilingual special education, Spanish, and English to migrant workers. She has coauthored books on effective instruction for English language learners, including Teaching English Language Learners: A Differentiated Approach (with Douglas Fisher) and Language Learners in the English Classroom (with Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey). She currently teaches classes for new teachers on effective instruction of English language learners. Carol can be reached at
