A key component of The Art and Science of Teaching is a teacher's approach to establishing and maintaining classroom rules and procedures. This module and the next (Module 17) address these issues in the context of Design Question 6: What will I do to establish or maintain classroom rules and procedures?
At the beginning of each academic year, effective teachers ensure that their students are clear about what they are expected to do and how they are expected to do it. Throughout the year, teachers also need to revisit with students the rules and procedures for which they are responsible. It is especially important to have ongoing discussions with students to ensure that appropriate modifications are made in a timely manner, including additions and alterations to reinforce the classroom as a community of collaborative learning.
