We are proud to share the news that two members of ASCD’s Board of Directors, Noris Price and Avis Williams, have earned recent recognition for their achievements in district leadership.
Williams, the vice president of ASCD’s board and the superintendent of Selma City Schools in Selma, Alabama, has been recognized as one of two finalists for the AASA Women in School Leadership Award (the winner will be announced in February 2022). The award recognizes the talent, creativity, and vision of outstanding educational administrators in the nation’s public schools.
Williams, who has been superintendent in Selma since 2017, has overseen significant improvements in student achievement and graduation rates in the district and led it out of state intervention. This school year, she has implemented an extensive program to address learning and equity gaps from the pandemic. Williams was previously selected as the Alabama Alliance of Black School Educators Superintendent of the Year in 2020 and was a finalist for Alabama State Superintendent of the Year in 2019.
Meanwhile, Price, superintendent of Baldwin County Schools, in Milledgeville, Georgia, has been named the 2022 Georgia Superintendent of the Year by the Georgia School Superintendents Association and will be in the running for National Superintendent of the Year this spring. Under Price's leadership, Baldwin County Schools has implemented instructional initiatives and strategies that have resulted in improved student performance and an increase in the graduation rate from 66 to 85 percent over a six-year period. Price has also been instrumental in procuring more than $10 million in grant funds for her district.

What Does the ASCD Board Do?

The ASCD Board of Directors oversees the association’s scope of work and strategic direction and is responsible for ensuring that ASCD’s policies, programs, and services are implemented and consistent with its values and beliefs. The board includes both elected and appointed members and meets several times a year.
