National Professional Development Center Launched

The North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL), in collaboration with ASCD, has launched the John Edward Porter Professional Development Center, a national resource to help schools and school districts plan and implement professional development activities. The Center will provide frameworks for quality professional development plans, build the organization's capacity to implement the plans, and find and integrate the best research-based resources to put the plans into action.
The Center, which will be based at NCREL in Naperville, Illinois, is now in its development stage and is expected to be operational by late 2002. Partial services will be offered during the pilot phase. For more information, contact Claudette Rasmussen (Claudette.Rasmussen@ncrel.org), Center director, or Agnes Crawford (acrawfor@ascd.org), ASCD assistant executive director for program development.

LFA: Major Changes to ESEA

With the recent passage of the No Child Left Behind Act, the reauthorized version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), states and districts must now meet a new set of requirements that will have an enormous impact on students. The Learning First Alliance, a partnership of ASCD and 11 other education organizations, has issued the report “Major Changes to ESEA in the No Child Left Behind Act” to provide a summary of key provisions in the new law concerning assessments, accountability, educator quality, reading, and flexibility. To access this report and other information about ESEA implementation, visit the ESEA section of the ASCD Web site (http://focuson.ascd.org).
