During its March meeting at Empower17 in Anaheim, California, the ASCD Board of Directors elected Ben Shuldiner for a second term as ASCD President and Leslie W. Grant as ASCD Vice President. Both leaders will serve a one-year term beginning July 1, 2017.
Ben Shuldiner is the Distinguished Lecturer of Education Leadership at Hunter College, City University of New York. He has worked in the field of education for more than 15 years as a teacher, principal, and professor. In 2015, he was appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio to serve on the board of the New York City Department of Education, known as the Panel for Educational Policy.
Shuldiner founded Brooklyn's High School for Public Service (HSPS) in 2003, where he became the youngest high school principal in New York State. Under his leadership, HSPS was named one of the top 50 high schools in New York City by the Daily News and received a bronze medal from U.S. News & World Report. In 2010, HSPS was recognized as the top Title I school in New York, the first time a high school had ever won this award. Shuldiner helped lead innovative projects at HSPS that gained national acclaim, from the creation of a one-acre organic farm to a schoolwide grading curriculum focused on mastery and proficiency.
Leslie W. Grant is Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Associate Professor for Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership in the School of Education at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.
