And the band played on in Springville, New York—despite fierce winter winds. School public relations specialist Ed Knierim dashed a half mile through the snow to take this shot of the Springville-Griffith Institute High School band. "The storm was unexpected and brutal," Knierim says. "When I ran to reach the band, this was the first frame I took." Student conductor Nikki Stachowski (far left) kept her cool to deftly lead the musicians, many playing metal instruments with bare fingers. By the time they finished, the group was standing in several inches of wintry mix.
