What do Wordle, random acts of kindness, and sainthood have in common?
They are the subjects of ASCD resources and EL magazine articles that won Gold EXCEL awards from SIIA’s AM&P Network during the annual award ceremony on June 27, 2023. EXCEL awards honor excellence in nonprofit association media, publishing, marketing, and communications, and ASCD came away from the evening with multiple awards across categories.
The pieces that won a Gold award were:
- Nell Duke’s popular blog post, “What Wordle Reminds Us About Effective Phonics and Spelling Instruction” (Digital Media, Single Blog Post);
- Chase Mielke’s inspiring (and maybe even tear-jerking) column, “The Burnout Rx: Compounding Influence” (Magazine Column);
- and Elizabeth Dampf’s EL article, “It’s About Skillsets and Support, Not Sainthood” (Magazine Editorial/Online Piece), which asks us to rethink the burdens we place on our teachers to unconditionally love the job.
Other EL wins include:
- A Silver award for the December 2022/January 2023 issue, “Confronting Poverty in Schools” (Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives – Dedicated Issue).
- A Silver award for “The Power of Doing Less in Schools” by Justin Reich (Magazine Feature Article).
- A Bronze award for the October 2022 issue, “The Education Profession: Changing the Narrative” (Magazines – Single Topic Issue).
The ASCD Books team also garnered two awards:
- A Silver award for Equity in Data: A Framework for What Counts in Schools by Andrew Knips, Sonya Lopez, Michael Savoy, and Kendall LaParo (Technical Books).
- A Bronze award for From Underestimated to Unstoppable: 8 Archetypes for Driving Change in the Classroom and Beyond by Ashley Lamb-Sinclair (Technical Books).
